Do you have trouble sleeping or feeling rested after you wake up? Did you know your vitamin D levels are related to sleep?
We discussed the relationships between vitamin D, brain neurotransmitters, the gut and sleep for this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with Harvard trained neurologist, Dr. Stasha Gominak. Dr. Gominak is recognized as a leader in the new field of neurotransmitter-based treatment of sleep disorders.
Dr. Gominak shared her journey into the world of sleep disorders after focusing on peripheral neuropathy for years. She realized that those with headaches had disruptions in their sleep phases, specifically deep sleep which includes slow deep sleep and REM sleep.
We then discussed how she stumbled on the relationship between vitamin D and poor sleep. She stressed that vitamin D is a hormone produced by skin in response to sun.
Dr. Gominak mentioned the importance of vitamin D in all the body processes, including fertility, hibernation, gut health, bones and so much more. In all her cases where people were not getting quality sleep, their blood vitamin D levels were low.
We dove into the specifics of what are the ideal blood vitamin D levels for someone looking for quality sleep when they’ve had disruptions. She explained that dosage does not equate to blood levels so if you begin a certain dose, you need to regularly check your blood vitamin D levels to see if it has responded appropriately to get you where you need for restful sleep.
She also mentioned the role of B vitamins and the gut microbiome and how both affect the sleep switch in the brain to help us sleep soundly. She highlighted the effect of low vitamin D on the gut microbiome which impacts its ability to make all the B vitamins that impact the brain.
Dr. Gominak has the RightSleep® program that uses over-the-counter vitamins and changes in behavior to improve or normalize your sleep. She works on restoring your proper brain chemistry, and your gut microbiome, so you can experience consistent healing through sleep.
Dr. Gominak practiced Neurology in the San Francisco Bay area from 1991-2004 and then began to dedicate more of her practice to the treatment of sleep and sleep disorders. In 2012 and 2016 she published two pivotal articles about the global struggle with worsening sleep, the possible causes and solutions, related to vitamin D deficiency and the intestinal microbiome.
Please join us to learn how your sleep can be affected by vitamin D deficiency and a disruption of your gut microbiome.

Have you ever had pain in your pelvic or genital areas? Did you know that treatment is possible through a pelvic health physical therapist?
We discussed this topic and more for this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with Amy Vander Linden. Amy owns Moment of Truth Physical Therapy and has been a physical therapist for over 20 years with a specialization in pelvic floor health.
We discussed what is meant by “pelvic floor” and the most common conditions she sees for men and women. She explained that treatment can involve both internal and external work in the pelvic area depending on the patient’s comfort.
Amy went through some of the changes that happen when women become pregnant and deliver a baby. She notes she often works with women to undo excessive practice of Kegel exercises. She notes women are often taught to tighten up all the muscles in their pelvic area which leads to some of the problems they are experiencing.
She also went through some of the types of prolapse that can afflict women and why her treatment can help them avoid surgery. We also dove into incontinence and the importance of educating women to not just live with the condition but to seek help and learn how to sense their bodies differently.
Amy stressed the importance of men receiving help for their pelvic health and how the pelvic floor muscles differ in the number of layers compared to women. She explained that both men and women need her help for painful sexual intercourse.
Amy was a wealth of knowledge in this area and has her own podcast called Bellies, Babies, and Birth. She also trains other therapists who want to specialize in this area.

Have you or a female friend recently gone through a mammogram as part of yearly testing? Did you or your friend feel discomfort or have complaints about the process?
For this week’s episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we interviewed CEO and chemist Elizabeth Cormier-May about mammograms and the importance of testing for breast cancer. Elizabeth shared with us her novel approach that is now being tested through pilot studies that allows for easy detection of cancer markers.
Elizabeth began her career as a medicinal chemist focusing on ways to discover cancer in its early stages. She decided to change into diagnostics to have a greater impact in women’s lives.
We first discussed some of the issues with mammograms that are a barrier to them being performed on a regular basis for women aged 40 year and older. We explored the issue of false positives and the difficulty of detection for those with dense breast tissue.
We also touched on the lack of accessibility to mammograms for those in more rural areas and how that led Elizabeth to search for other ways to provide a screening test. She began working with Mammogen, a female-led biotechnology company that uses the proprietary genTRU™ liquid biopsy platform.
Elizabeth explained the premise of liquid biopsy and went into the technology that allows for the detection cancer markers in saliva and blood. She discussed how cancer leads to changes in our RNA so their technology detects those biomarker changes that are in our body fluids.
This process allows for women all over the world who have little access to healthcare clinics to be able to receive a test kit in the mail and do a saliva swab to determine if she has cancer markers that warrant a mammogram or further testing. It helps remove the barriers to testing like discomfort from a mammogram or poor detection due to dense breast tissue.
Mammogen is currently doing pilot studies in various areas around the United States to provide more solid data to back up their initial highly successful results. Part of their work is to make this affordable and accessible to all, even those who are younger with a history of breast cancer in the family.
Elizabeth has been in the biotechnology industry for nearly 20 years. As well as leading Mammogen, Liz is also the CCO of IV Bioholdings; a bio innovation studio that conceives, creates and develops first-in-category RNA bio platforms which radically improve the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Currently, she is Chairman of the Board, Co-Founder, President and CEO of her digital health start-up, Persona Health, Inc. and CEO and Board Director of Mammogen, Inc.
Please join us to learn this amazing technology to help you and women in your life detect breast cancer.
Please feel free to reach out to Elizabeth Cormier-May at https://www.mammogen.bio/.
