Growing up, we are often told to eat our mushrooms, but we often cringed when they were put in front of us.  Perhaps the idea of eating a fungus is or was appalling, but their health benefits are too numerous to count!

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, Jeff Chilton, president of Nammex, a company producing organic mushroom extracts for medicinal use, joined to share all about mushrooms not only as food but as medicine.

Jeff has been in this industry since 1973, working on farms and creating his own business in 1989 to provide organic mushroom extracts to the US. He has traveled countless times to China to study all about mushrooms.

He explained why you want to choose supplements whose mushrooms come from China. He stressed the importance of looking at the label of a supplement bottle to see if you are truly getting mushroom or just mycelium grown on a grain.

We covered many of the health benefits of specific mushrooms, from helping the overall immune system to boosting the liver and other organs.  Jeff shared the importance of beta glucan, a compound in mushrooms that provides the health boost we are all looking for.

Jeff even gave tips on how to cook mushrooms so they are more appetizing for those who don't like the flavor or are disinterested.

Jeff is also co-author of the highly-acclaimed book, The Mushroom Cultivator.  He is the founder of Mycomedia and an international speaker on the topic.

Please join us to learn how vital mushrooms are to your immune system and overall health.

The coaching profession has exploded lately with so many types of life, health and relationship coaching services. It can be confusing to know if we need a coach for our life events and what that looks like.

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we interviewed transformational life coach Linda Downey to explore the meaning of a life coach and when we might need one.

Linda explained how she got into the coaching field through her desire to improve her own health and that of others around her.  She realized how closely related a person's health status is to how they feel "stuck" in life.

Linda's personal journey of having a chronically ill daughter for 15 years who was in and out of the hospital put her under extreme stress. She understood the value of having coaches in her life to help her get through those trying times.

We discussed the difference between transformational life coaching and therapists, psychologists and counselors who help with trauma from the past.

We dove into the steps a transformational life coach takes with clients to discover their needs and help them become unstuck. She explained how it can often be unnerving to uncover a new identity and release the past.

Linda now has a 10-week program where she guides others through the life transformation process. She works with clients of all backgrounds but especially resonates with those who have lost a child or who have taken care of a chronically sick child.

Linda is also a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Integrative Health Practitioner, personal trainer and founder of Organic Health Journey.

Please join us to learn how a transformational life coach can help you become unstuck in your life.

For this week’s episode of the Reawaken Your Health podcast, I interviewed naturopathic physician Dr. Nicola Dehlinger to discuss a natural approach to treating and resolving anxiety.  Dr. Dehlinger is a speaker and thought leader with 20+ years of experience in the holistic wellness industry.

Dr. Dehlinger discusses her journey into naturopathic medicine, emphasizing the philosophy of addressing root causes rather than just symptoms, and working with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. She reflects on her initial disillusionment with conventional medicine during her undergraduate studies at Brown University. A pivotal moment came when a naturopathic doctor introduced her to the concept of working with the body rather than against it.

Dr. Dehlinger delves into the topic of anxiety, defining it as a misalignment between how individuals show up in the world (driven by external expectations and pressures) and their true selves, leading to feelings of overwhelm, unfulfillment, and physical symptoms like headaches, hormonal imbalances, and even heart issues.  She emphasizes that societal distractions—like entertainment, substances, and overworking—prevent individuals from confronting their emotions.

We discuss her approach to working with anxious patients, which includes breath work and elements of Internal Family Systems (IFS).   She helps clients with the release of emotional burdens and to achieve a deeper sense of inner harmony.

Dr. Dehlinger also explains the importance of other physiological, psychological, and lifestyle aspects, including hormonal and adrenal balance, sleep, diet and nutrition and mind-body connections.  She emphasizes the importance of addressing anxiety through a balanced, individualized, and compassionate approach, integrating mental, emotional, and physical health.

Dr. Nicola teaches a variety of classes, is a renowned speaker, and leads private and group retreats, both locally and globally, all to take patients into deeper healing. Dr. Nicola is the founder of Pura Vida Healthcare based in Durango, CO.

Our vision often changes in our teen years or early 20's and we are typically given classes or corrective contact lenses.  We don't always explore natural means of restoring our vision because they not considered a common treatment option.  What if there are ways to truly improve our vision without glasses or contacts?

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show, we discussed how to improve our vision naturally through the Bates Method and through Eye Yoga with expert Nathan Oxenfeld. Nathan shared his journey of eyesight improvement from needing assistance to having 20/15 and 20/10 eyesight.

We dove into relaxation of the eye muscles and other muscles of the body to allow our eyes to function better and have better focus.  Nathan explained how this is the main guiding principle to the Bates Method.

Nathan gave more tips on natural remedies including diet, nutrition, emotional considerations and what to consider when you are in front of a computer all day.  He even discussed who could benefit from all these tips!

Nathan is the author of Give Up Your Glasses For Good: Holistic Eye Care for the 21st Century, the host of The Naked Eye Podcast and The Better Eyesight Podcast, and the producer of the new documentary Vision 2020: From Eyesight To Insight.  He also founded Integral Eyesight Improvement, LLC.  Be prepared to learn a lot!

As we go through life, our experiences, thoughts and feelings influence our brain and its neurochemistry.  This in turn impacts the way we behave and react to our daily life activities.

We explored this topic for the Weekend Wellness Hour show with neuroenergetics expert, Sharon Greenspan.  Sharon is an international speaker and coach who helps those experiencing stress, burnout, and depression emerge from these states using biofield balancing and neuroplasticity.

Sharon suffered from depression and other health concerns in her adulthood and decided to start looking at options for healing. She began studying bio field balancing and positive neuroplasticity with Dr. Rick Hansen.

We broke down these concepts and explained how we need to fix the energy within us first through healing our chakras.  Sharon explained the biofield that's around us and how this influences our interactions with others.

We also discussed how we can fix the wiring in our brains to help us emerge from depression, anxiety and chronic pain. Sharon stressed the importance of aligning our thoughts and beliefs with our feelings in order to change our brain chemistry.

Sharon has a practice in Tucson, Arizona where she sees clients in person as well as virtually. Also a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, yoga therapist and health coach, Sharon has a wealth of knowledge about the healing world.  Be prepared to learn a lot!

Our homes are our castles, sanctuaries and safety. We don’t always realize that what we have in our homes can also influence our energy, performance, wellbeing and health.

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour show, we looked at the importance of Feng Shui with certified expert and business owner, Robyn Stevens.  Robyn shared how the spaces where you live and work directly influence your energy, prosperity and happiness.

Robyn began looking at the impact of Feng Shui 11 years ago while working as a corporate executive. She loved the impact it had on her life and became a certified expert to help others.

We discussed what is Feng Shui and the 9 life categories that are represented in your living space, whether it's the whole house or a specific room.  She gave examples of how prosperity is represented in the back left corner of the house, but love and relationships are represented in the back right corner.

Robyn shared examples of how to improve those areas of your home so that your home can enhance your energy in those areas of prosperity and relationships.  She even explained how to clear the energy of the previous owners or occupants of the home or space.

We dove into what to do about kids' rooms, office spaces and how to handle traveling.  Robyn helps people from all walks of life, including Fortune 500 execs, business owners, students and stay-at-home moms, transform their spaces—and their lives.  Be prepared to learn a lot!

Our bodies experience blockages throughout our lives that we are often unaware of.  We might feel "off" or unbalanced, or even have pain that shows up unexpectedly.  Sometimes we need hands-on assistance to help us work through the blockage and free our bodies.

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour show, we dove into craniosacral therapy with registered nurse and business owner, Amy Rinkevich.  Amy shared how this form of gentle hands-on treatment helps the functioning of fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Early in her career, Amy sought a form of healthcare that went beyond the traditional that focuses on medications and surgeries and ended up studying craniosacral therapy over 20 years ago.  She realized the power of creating movement in connective tissues such as fascia and saw the healing benefits with her patients.

Amy described what a treatment session looks like and what clients experience when they go through this form of therapy.  We then discussed the conditions that can benefit from craniosacral treatment and how it helps with pain.

We explored which age groups benefit and why newborns could possibly benefit from this modality as well as the elderly and those with dementia.  She explained a few cases where this hands-on approach might not be ideal.

Amy has her own practice working with clients in Tampa, Florida and has been in this space for over 20 years. Be prepared to learn a lot!

Do you have a health condition or disease that’s affecting your life and struggle to improve your health?  Have you heard of plasmalogens and the amazing benefits they can have on your brain and heart?

For this week’s episode of the Reawaken Your Health podcast, I interviewed Dr. Goodenowe to discuss how plasmalogens are helping those with neurodegenerative diseases boost their brain health. Dr. Goodenowe is a PhD neuroscientist, biochemist, synthetic organic chemist, inventor, and clinical research expert who uses spectrometry technology to study the biochemistry of human blood.

As a research scientist, Dr. Goodenowe became interested in restoring human health instead of fixing symptoms.  He discussed his desire to find ways to detect changes in human blood before the onset of a disease so changes to lifestyle could be made earlier to ward off disease development.

We explored how plasmalogens can be used in this approach to healthcare and why plasmalogens can help with conditions that degrade the human brain.  Dr. Goodenowe explained how plasmalogens are lipids that are found normally within our cell membranes, but they decline with lifestyle choices.

He discussed how low levels of these lipids correlates to dementia.  We touched on the build up of inflammation in the body and how mitochondria are impacted.

Dr. Goodenowe also shared on breastmilk having the precursors that make plasmalogens which makes nursing highly desired if it’s possible.  He gave recommendations on lifestyle choices to help minimize the decline in plasmalogens in our cells.

Dr. Goodenowe continues to study the benefits of plasmalogens in other conditions including cancer, long COVID, ADHD, autism, and autoimmune disorders. He shared stories of helping a patient see again after being blind for 30 years!

Please join us to learn more about how plasmalogens can benefit your health!

Life and health transformations are worth it in the end, but they take a lot of hard work.  They often take a mindset change and a support team along the way.

For this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour show, we interviewed Dan Grieb about life transformations and his amazing dedication to helping the first person with Down Syndrome complete an Ironman triathlon in under 17 hours.  Dan is a mentor, leader, and business owner who changed his life and made health and wellness a priority.

Dan shared with us his life growing up with an abusive father and his decision to not follow in those footsteps.  He had an internal drive and worked on his mindset to become great at whatever he set his mind to.

A few years ago, he realized he had a full and happy life in all aspects, except his health.  He weighed over 300lbs and needed to lose 110-120 lbs so he embarked on a journey, one that led him to complete 10 full Ironman races in 2 years.

He realized his health journey wasn't over and decided to help others achieve their dreams as well.  That led him to guiding Chris Nikic, a 21-year old man with Down Syndrome complete a full Ironman race in November 2020.

Dan shares with us the hardships and difficulties that arose during the race and how they overcame them.  He also shares the valuable lessons that he learned from Chris that he applies to his life now.
